Alimentation de la sole et de la plie en Manche ArchiMer

This document summaries major results about the diet of sole Solea solea and plaice Pleuronectes platessa in the English Channel, collected in the framework of the VARITROPH project. Both species have a similar diet, based on crustaceans, but plaice exhibit a larger diversity of secundary species (bivalves, annelids and echinoderms) than sole (annelids only). Diversity of the preys for plaice is explained by differences between size classes. Diet of small individuals is less diverse than the diet of large individuals. Trophic similarity between sole and plaice is also exhibited when comparing ontogenic changes of trophic levels, that are pretty similar for both species, and consistent with a diet based on small invertebrates.

This document summaries the major findings about the diet of whiting Merlangius merlangus in the English Channel, in the framework of the VARITROPH project. Whiting diet is based on several main preys, with an ontogenic variation. Individuals lower than 30 cm mostly fed on crustaceans, while diet of larger individuals is based on cephalopods and fishes. As a result, trophic level show 2 phases, one increasing at the early life stages, and a constant trophic level for individuals larger than 30 cm.

Investigating the drivers of fish assemblage trophic structure is a critical question, in order to better understand ecosystem functioning, predict the effects of perturbations and implement integrated management of exploited marine ecosystems. Ecosystemic surveys enabled the determination of the trophic structure of the fish assemblages in three French marine ecosystems, namely the Eastern English Channel, the Bay of Biscay and the Gulf of Lions, through the simultaneous collection of qualitative (stable isotopes and energy content) and quantitative (biomass) data. Seasonal and ontogenetic variation of whiting diet in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea ArchiMer

An accurate description of trophic interactions is crucial to understand ecosystem functioning and sustainably manage marine ecosystems exploitation. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were coupled with stomach content analyses to investigate whiting (Merlangius merlangus, Linnaeus, 1758) feeding behavior in the Eastern English Channel and Southern North Sea. Whiting juveniles and adults were sampled in autumn and winter to investigate both ontogenetic and seasonal changes. Underestimation of chemical contamination in marine fish muscle tissue can be reduced by considering variable wet:dry weight ratios ArchiMer

Whether considered as a risk for human health or as ecological tracers, contaminants' concentrations measured in fish muscles are commonly expressed relative to wet or dry mass. Comparison of results required conversion factors (CF) but accurate values are scarce and case-specific. The present paper is aimed at investigating errors linked with the use of the theoretical value. Muscles dry and wet masses were measured in 15 fish species to determine the actual CF. Most CF were lower than the theoretical wet:dry ratio of 5 classically used, with variations at individual and species level. Les interactions trophiques sont à la base de nombreux processus régissant la structure et le fonctionnement des écosystèmes. Cependant, de nombreuses sources de variations sont mal connues comme les variations saisonnières et ontogéniques. Ces variations ont été appréhendées à plusieurs niveaux d’organisation, l’assemblage, l’espèce et l’individu dans les écosystèmes de Manche orientale (MO) et de la baie sud de la mer du Nord (BSMDN).
